Hemodynamics
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) Calculator
Average pressure driving blood through the organs, worked from systolic and diastolic; the usual perfusion target in shock.
Formula
MAP = (SBP + 2 × DBP) / 3
Reference: Normal 70–105
How it is used
- Patients with a MAP that is under or above set goal values should be treated with fluids, blood products, vasopressors, inotropes, or vasodilators depending on the clinical scenario.
Key points
- A MAP ≥60 mmHg is believed to be needed to maintain adequate tissue perfusion.
- A MAP ≥65 mmHg is the recommended initial target in adults with septic shock who need vasopressors.
